Top things to do in Luxembourg city(2025)

The last time I was in this beautiful albeit tiny European country was 2022 but I figured a trip back in 2025 demanded a better summation of the top things I have done in Luxembourg city over the two years. Note that there are tonnes of things outside Luxembourg city too that you could do especially if you love nature and history since the country is surrounded by dense forests and fortified castles. We actually did include Vianden in our itinerary in 2022 and a drive from Vianden to Luxembourg city meant lots of pit stops at castles and hiking trails. But for the purposes of this article, let me share with you some of the coolest things I have enjoyed doing in Luxembourg city over two trips.

  • Fortress city boasts of a centre which has a beautiful old palace, a stunning bridge, a cathedral and so much more. So my most favourite thing to do in Luxembourg is simply a walking tour of the city centre. Points to hit include Bock Casemates, Chemin de la Corniche, Grand ducal Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and a few others. Do a self devised tour with a path you decide for yourself or just get lost. It's all extremely scenic and there's almost no way for you to actually get lost. In the best situation you will end up at a fortification that you did not know existed. My favourite part is to take a seat near the Gëlla Fra or the Monument of Remembrance and just watching people pass by. There is also always something happening here so for instance this time around there seemed to be a cute little carnival going on. TIP: You will be taking a lot of photos trust me, so free up some space in your phone!

  • Exploring the Grund is a whole experience that you should not miss in Luxembourg city. Grund is a little quarter in the city, engorged in the valley so it is surrounded by the lovely river Alzette and is the favourite for a lot of us snap-happies. Hike from the city down to the grund or take an elevator from the centre, whatever your method be there is definitely something for you to see here. It is full of cute little restaurants with beautiful gardens or terraces serving up Luxembourg's own sparkling crémants (not to be missed). Or skip that and just walk around admiring the historic quarter looking out for the different fortifications and a few interesting places of note like the Wenzel wall or the Melusina statute.

  • Art lovers have a little something for them in Luxembourg too. The first time around we visited Mudam; Museum of Modern Art which is impressive not just for its modern and contemporary art displays but also the spectacular architecture! There was a temporary exhibit by artist Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and it was extremely impressive. This was in 2022 but this time around I visited Villa Vauban which with its Bourgeois Villa architecture was just as charming. Villa Vauban is more for the classic Dutch and French artworks from the 17th to 19th century. We caught the Viaggio in Italia exhibit and were quite taken in with all the landscapes of different Italian cities that the select artists had covered. I do recommend exploring the art scene in Luxembourg, there seems to enough options for everybody. P.S.: Villa Vauban is housed in a park which has the loveliest terrace called Mikrokosmos right in the centre for a drink or a snack, if you would like.

  • Make Place d'Armes your central point and walk all around this town square. One of the most buzzing squares in the city, Place d'Armes is also where the City Palace is at. My favourite part about hovering around here is how it feels during the summer. With the terraces full, people out in swarms to shop and get together, this to me feels like having a finger on the pulse of the city. Of course, you would probably see tonnes of tourists too but the vibe around here is largely shop, eat, get a drink and soak up some sun. This is also where the Christmas market pops up during the winter. Bonus tip: Do yourself a favour and get yourself a sandwich at Charles when you around here. Had it twice now, two different ones on two trips and it does not disappoint.

Additional tips: Do for love for specialty coffee, Florence and Small talk for coffee and sandwiches, Brasserie vis-a-vis for crémants with a view.

What would you be adding to your itinerary for Luxembourg city out of these? I would love to hear!
